Mark Drakeford has announced the closure of the England/Wales border to stop Coronavirus coming to Wales from English COVID hotspots. People from Englands tier 2 AND tier 3 will now have to quarantine if travelling into Wales.
As we reported 10 days ago, Welsh Health Minister Vaughan Gething announced the Welsh government was “actively considering” closing the Welsh/English border; quarantining people travelling into Wales, treating them the same as travellers from forign COVID-19 hotspot.
At last Mondays Welsh COVID-19 Briefing, Vaughan Gethings said: “We are actively considering what we should do and I’ve discussed it this morning with the First Minister.
“For some of the hotspot areas in the north of England, North East and North West, and the West Midlands; if they were other countries or territories, we would have quarantine regulations for them to return to the UK.”
“We’re having to consider how we use our power to protect lower-prevalence areas of Wales but at the same time, we don’t want to take a whole nation approach,”
Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford is expected to announce the harsh measures today. Over the last 10 days, sources have told that Drakeford has attempted to explain the issues Wales are facing, with their own fight against the virus being made extremelly difficlut as people are allowed to travel into Wales from England, bringing the virus with them.
The border restrictions will mean anyone travelling from England into Wales will have to quarantine for 14 days. People travelling from England will be treated the same way as people coming from COVID-hot countries abroad.
The Welsh Government believe that if they are to stop the spread of Coronavirus in Wales they must take this ‘extraordinary’ step.
Sources say that Drakeford has had enough and will announce a future welsh border closure; However, only time will tell if this is a genuine threat or media bluff to force Boris into speaking with Drakeford.
Do the Welsh mean business? We will soon see!
